The Upward Bound Project would like to thank University of Iowa students Gustavo Corona, Maria Johnson, and Rocio Rivera and the Center for Diversity & Enrichment’s Multicultural Coordinator Gabriela Rivera for attending Upward Bound’s senior kick-off meetings. Every September, the Upward Bound Project schedules senior kick-off meetings to begin the exciting process of preparing seniors for their launch into postsecondary education.
Corona, Johnson, G. Rivera, and R. Rivera volunteered their personal time to travel to communities in Columbus Community High School, Davenport Central High School, Muscatine High School, and West Liberty High School the week of September 14 to speak to Upward Bound seniors and parents.
The guest speakers touched on topics related to the path to postsecondary education, the family relationship and college, and what to expect as freshmen.
As first-generation college students themselves, Corona, Johnson, G. Rivera, and R. Rivera could easily relate to Upward Bound students who will also be first-generation college students. Corona is a graduate of Columbus Community High School, Johnson is a graduate of Davenport West High School, and R. Rivera is a West Liberty High School graduate.
Upward Bound seniors enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions of people from their communities who have succeeded in postsecondary education.

Hablas Español?
Conversations in Spanish took place last Wednesday, September 16 at the Latino Native American Cultural Center as a kick-off event for Latino Heritage Month. Students gathered around the table to eat, talk and learn more about each other. Latino Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide and begins on September 15, 2009, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico achieved independence on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. Latino Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long observation.
Conversations in Spanish is a retention program for students who speak Spanish or would like to improve on their Spanish. It gives students an opportunity to discuss current topics related to the language and culture in an informal setting. This program takes place once a semester. For more information, please contact Gabriela Rivera.

Are you in Principles of Chemistry or Biology 1 or 2 or Organic Chemistry 1? If so, read on!
Check out Supplemental Instruction (SI) to get a better grade in the course, deepen your understanding of the material and have a good time studying with your peers!
SI sessions are 50 minutes that you would likely be studying anyway, where you can review lecture content, ask questions and make sure you are prepared for the exams with a group of other students trying to do the same thing. Research shows that students who use SI regularly (at least once each week) earn a higher grade than they would have without going!
The SI leader got a good grade in the course so they know what needs to be done! Come and learn from them and your classmates as well as share what you are learning. It’s a great opportunity for all involved!
Just show up at the session of your choice to get involved. Don’t wait – space is limited to 15 students per session!

The (Self-Proclaimed) Quirky Coordinator Kicks It at Community of Color
Hey, studentz. Yeah, you. I kicked it at Community of Color. Did you? If you didn’t, where were you? Hey, I just turned 27-years-old. Old. And, if I can kick-it at Community of Color, then you can too; you should have no excuses. You’ve got youth on your side, and I certainly don’t.
If you didn’t make it (and you should have), then I’ll tell you what I did there. Maybe you’ll decide to become cool like me and attend this biannual event in the spring. And, if you did make it, then maybe you bumped into me: self-proclaimed-quirky-coordinator-of-the-Upward-Bound-ilk, so you should read on to see if you’re cool enough to be mentioned in this article I so masterfully created. (I am a product of the UI School of Journalism by the way. Go, Hawks!)
