Supplemental Instruction

What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?
The purpose of SI is to provide structured peer-assisted group study in critical gateway courses (4:11 Principles of Chemistry I; 4:12 Principles of Chemistry II; 2:10 Principles of Biology I; 2:11 Principles of Biology II). The trained undergraduate facilitators correct group misconceptions, teach study skills, and keep the group on task. SI is administered by the Center for Diversity and Enrichment and funded by the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry.

Does SI work?
Those who regularly attend weekly SI sessions have averaged a half letter grade higher then those who have not attended.

How do I sign up?
Sign up information will be announced in the 4:11, 4:12, 2:10, and 2:11 lectures during the first week of class.  There is a limit of fifteen students per session.

What students say about SI

“As a group we were made to think critically about a chemistry problem, rather than being given the answer.”

“I definitely felt a lot more prepared after coming to class because things were explained thoroughly and questions were answered.”

“(The SI leader) spoke to us at a level we could understand and made difficult concepts easier.”

“I learned more in one hour…than I do in one week of lectures.”
