Hablas Español?

lnaccConversations in Spanish took place last Wednesday, September 16 at the Latino Native American Cultural Center as a kick-off event for Latino Heritage Month. Students gathered around the table to eat, talk and learn more about each other. Latino Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide and begins on September 15, 2009, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico achieved independence on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. Latino Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long observation.

Conversations in Spanish is a retention program for students who speak Spanish or would like to improve on their Spanish. It gives students an opportunity to discuss current topics related to the language and culture in an informal setting. This program takes place once a semester.
