Our Mission & Vision:
The Mission of the Center for Diversity & Enrichment is to bring to life the UI’s commitment to create a diverse and welcoming climate with a critical mass of students, staff and faculty from communities underrepresented in higher education. This office provides the primary leadership and coordination for outreach and service to underserved and minority communities for pre-college student development and recruitment, and for developing and sustaining programs and activities that support the ability of minority and underserved students from diverse backgrounds to increase their skills to thrive and succeed at The University of Iowa and develop a life-long commitment to independent learning.
Vision:
This goal requires CDE to be an effective resource for diverse and underserved students on our campus by:
- Having a visible presence on campus with an effective message of inclusion and community;
- Providing services to help students from minority and underserved communities by providing academic support, and connecting them with other available university and collegiate support;
- Working to develop community amongst students from minority and underserved communities; and
- Working to develop programming for all students that fosters a climate of inclusion and respect, and enhances cultural competency.
This goal also requires CDE to effectively reach out to the community by:
- Connecting with schools and community service providers in Iowa and the nearby region who provide services to underserved and minority communities to develop programming that enhances awareness of and preparedness for higher education; and
- Serving as a bridge between the university community and minority communities and community organizations in Iowa.
This combined office will improve the delivery of these services by:
- Allowing for better collaboration and common programming;
- Ease sharing of best practices and assessment of effectiveness;
- Eliminating some redundancies; and
- Facilitate institutionalization of federally-supported programming.
