The Iowa City-Cedar Rapids Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is pleased to announce the Delta GEMS program.

Delta GEMS was created to catch the dreams of African American, adolescent girls aged 14-18.  The framework of the Delta GEMS program consists of five major components including:

• Scholarship
• Sisterhood
• Show Me the Money
• Service
• Infinitely Complete

The program will provide the young ladies with support on the path to personal, academic, and professional success through a series of interactive workshops and activities. We need your help to actualize the dreams of these young ladies.  The workshops are implemented to foster a CAN DO attitude and encourage academic excellence. Through performance and task specific activities, GEMS will provide participants with the tools to sharpen and enhance their skills and assist the young ladies in appropriate goal setting and planning for their futures, high school and beyond.  Most importantly, GEMS is instrumental in encouraging young women to be compassionate and actively involved in their communities through service learning opportunities.

GEMS will commence in Spring 2010, with a series of bi-weekly workshops from February until June.  The program will conclude with a congratulatory event for the participants, their families and friends. For interested young women, parents, friends, or community members, an informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30p.m. at the Coralville Public Library E. Jean Schwab Auditorium. The address is 1401 Fifth Street Coralville, Iowa 52241. We need your help: If you know of any young ladies who would benefit from or be interested in this program, please encourage them to attend this meeting.

KAPPA ALPHA PSI
Gamma Chapter Foundation Scholarship Fund

The Gamma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated is pleased to present the Gamma Chapter Foundation Scholarship Fund.  A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified African American student who is currently enrolled full time as an undergraduate at the University of Iowa (UI) and will be enrolled full time at the UI during the next academic year.  Scholarships are to be used by students to supplement other financial assistance.  All awards will be sent directly to the University of Iowa and are restricted to tuition, room and board, fees, textbooks and other directly related educational expenses.  Applications must be submitted with the requested materials by January 25, 2010 to be considered.

The Committee on Institutional Cooperation is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the 2010 CIC Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP).

Applications will be accepted until February 10, 2010.

SROP is the gateway to graduate education at CIC universities. Students underrepresented in graduate study are invited to apply for a summer program designed to enhance their academic and research skills by working one-on-one with a faculty mentor from top ranked research institutions.  All SROP students on the host campus meet weekly as a group for educational enrichment activities and special seminars.  Participants from all of the campuses will come together in July for the annual SROP Conference at Ohio State University.  Students gain experience as an undergraduate to put them at an advantage as a graduate applicant.  At the same time they will earn money and have all expenses paid during this full time summer research opportunity.  It’s the competitive edge they will need to rank above the best of the best.

Students wishing to participate in SROP must meet the minimum eligibility criteria:

• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale)
• Be a citizen or a permanent resident of the U.S.
• Be enrolled in a degree-granting program at a college or university in the United States, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory
• Have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate education
• Have at least one semester of undergraduate education remaining after completing the program
• Have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D.
